The Brevard Lacrosse Alliance was chosen as Heart of the Game’s next recipients of AEDs in part because of the work the Alliance, along with the Lacrosse association of sport safety and education “LASSE”, has done to raise awareness about sudden cardiac arrest among young athletes. The organization had been fundraising to purchase an AED after local lacrosse player Colin Seely collapsed on a Viera High School field while running laps during ROTC. The Board and the volunteers at the association figured Colin’s incident hit too close to home, and they wanted to make sure they were prepared should another child suddenly go into sudden cardiac arrest.

Thankfully, an AED was quickly employed and it saved Colin’s life. Thanks to this donation by Heart of the Game, the Alliance no longer has to worry about fundraising to buy new AEDs – instead, they can get back to focusing on the kids and making lacrosse accessible for all of Brevard County’s kids.

Lisa Glasband, Vice President for the Heart of the Game, Inc., presented the two AEDS to parents, instructors, members of the board of directors for the Brevard Lacrosse Alliance, as well as the players for the local Brevard Lacrosse teams.

Also in attendance were Colin Seeley and Lexi Sima and their families. Colin was saved by an AED just weeks earlier. Lexi had a similar experience with a life-saving AED two years ago after collapsing while running on a treadmill when she was just 16 years.

Heart of the Game, Inc. donates a mobile AED to Ball for Life United, a local inner city youth basketball program in West Palm Beach.

Heart of the Game, Inc. is proud to be able to donate a mobile AED to Ball for Life United, a 501 (c)(3) non-profit based in West Palm Beach. The founder of Ball for Life is Adam Charles, and the group exists to coach young inner city youth in the game of basketball. The group practices in various gyms and courts around town, and until now, never had an AED of their own.

Ball for Life is also a travel basketball team, and the mobility and convenience of this particular AED model allows the device to travel easily with the team.

Pictures and in attendance during the giveaway ceremony is HOTG founder Craig M. Goldenfarb of the Law Offices of Craig Goldenfarb, P.A., and Dave Magruder, CEO of Life Safety Solutions, a local AED distributor. This particular AED was donated by Mr. Magruder.

In August 2018, HOTG presented the AED to Mr. Charles, and got a chance to see the kids practice.

Heart of the Game’s Executive Board is pleased to announce the inaugural HOTG Charity Golf Tournament 2018, taking place at the Banyan Cay Resort & Golf Club of West Palm Beach on Friday, December 7th 2018. There will be a 9:00 a.m. shotgun start to kick off the tournament.

Contests include longest drive, closest to the pin, hole-in-one, and many more! A silent and live auction with cocktails and hors d’oeuvres will follow the end of tournament play.

Proceeds form the golf tournament will allow Heart of the Game to raise crucial dollars and donations that will be used to acquire and distribution Automated External Defibrillators (AEDs), and proper use and care training, to facilities, groups, and organizations that are otherwise unable to attain these lifesaving devices.

The course is located in the Land of the Presidents in West Palm Beach, Florida, at 2300 Presidential Way, West Palm Beach, FL 33401. The signature course was designed by Jack Nicklaus. Take a look at the rendering of the Banyan Cay course here.

The annual report includes a chapter on Sudden Cardiac Arrest. According to the report, about 326,200 people experienced out-of-hospital cardiac arrests (OHCA) in the U.S. in 2011. (This compares with a reported incidence of 424,000 in the AHA’s Heart and Stroke Statistics–2014 Update.) Of those treated by emergency medical services, 10.6 percent survived. Of the 19,300 bystander-witnessed cases in which individuals had a heart rhythm that could be treated effectively with a defibrillator (ventricular fibrillation-VF or ventricular tachycardia-VT), 31.4 percent survived.

“The findings from the American Heart Association report suggest encouragement and caution,” said Bobby V. Khan, MD, PhD, Director, Atlanta Vascular Research Foundation, who serves as Sudden Cardiac Arrest Foundation board chair. “First, even though cardiovascular disease continues to carry a high burden in the United States–one in three deaths is directly attributed to CVD–there has been a significant reduction in events over the last 50 years, a trend that has continued over the last decade. Early recognition and improvement of risk factors involved in CVD have contributed to this trend.
“Furthermore, the AHA report findings indicate that earlier intervention in cases of sudden cardiac arrest increases the chances of survival and a better quality of life. We must continue to emphasize the importance of doing whatever is possible to prevent sudden cardiac arrest–and we must continue to educate the public about what to do if they witness a sudden cardiac emergency.”
